SeRenoWood - Austria's industry project for serial renovation

Machbarkeitsstudien Energy Innovations & Demonstration Projects Lifecycle Costs & Economic Efficiency Energy Services & Business Models

Project description

The building sector faces a central challenge: to meet climate targets, renovations must be carried out much faster, more efficiently, and more sustainably. A promising approach is serial renovation using prefabricated timber elements. While this method has already been successfully tested in some countries, it is still scarcely established in the Austrian market.

The goal of SeRenoWood is to lay the foundations for the broad application of this method in Austria. For this purpose, industry standards are being developed that benefit both the timber construction sector and large building owners. These standards enable faster implementation of renovation projects while ensuring quality and efficiency.

Project contents at a glance

  • Reference modules: Development of standardized modules for different building types
  • Standard processes and templates: Harmonized workflows for planning and implementation
  • Integration of building services: Efficient incorporation of heating, ventilation, and other systems into the modular elements
  • Building physics solutions: Strategies for sound, thermal, and moisture protection

Digital and sustainable approaches

A central tool of the project is the digital twin, which simulates technical processes and helps identify interface problems at an early stage. In addition, processes are continuously optimized to overcome both technical weaknesses and organizational challenges.
Sustainability is at the core: Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) ensure a comprehensive consideration of ecological and economic impacts.

Role of e7

As a research partner, e7 plays a key role in the following areas:

  • Analysis of building portfolios with regard to their suitability for serial renovation
  • Development and evaluation of solutions for integrating building services into timber elements
  • Technical expertise in energy efficiency, building technology, and process optimization

With this, SeRenoWood makes an important contribution to significantly increasing the renovation rate in the building sector – and brings Austria one step closer to achieving its climate targets.
